Lahaina Historic District Maui


Lahainatown in Maui, Hawaii encompassesa section of the Lahaina Historic District, which was historically theadministrative center of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Because of its location on the island, the location was perfectforHawaiian monarchs, fishing boats, and missionaries . Both land and water are included in the historic area; theold town of Lahaina and the oceans one mile from the historic section of town are part of the historic district. Becauseof this, it is under the watchful eye of the National Parks Service.Located on the western side of the island of Maui in the United States state of Hawaii, the Lahaina Historic District isa National Historic Landmark District that encompasses much of the village of Lahaina, Hawaii. The area, which wasestablished in 1962, honors Lahaina for its well-preserved character as a 19th-century port, as well as for its socialand economic significance in the 19th century as a major whaling center in the Pacific and as one of the Kingdom ofHawaii’s capital towns.Donn Beach and Pete Wimberly played a significant part in the establishment of building rules to govern restorationand preservation projects in Lahaina during the early stages of the development of the island. In 1962, the buildingwas designated as a National Historic Landmark. North is bordered by Puuona Point, south by Makila Point, and eastby the ridge of hills that rises above the town. South is bordered by the town itself. Located on the island of Lnai, itswesternboundary encompasses the Lahaina Roads, a roadstead that was essential in the development of the townthroughout the nineteenth century.Prior to the entrance of European explorers in the late 18th century, Lahaina was a popular royal residence for themonarchs of Maui and a renowned tourist destination. When Kamehameha I began his conquest of Maui in 1795, hemade his landing here, and when Kamehameha II erected a home here in 1819, he did the same. The arrival of thefirst whaling ships in the same year marked the beginning of the community’s ascent in economic importance. Lahainasupplanted Oahu as the preferred whaling port between 1840 and 1855, owing to the superior deep-water anchorageavailable there. The capital of Hawaii was established in Lahainain 1825 by King Kamehameha III, who preferred itto the more crowded Honolulu as a result of his ascension to the throne. The whaling business began to fall inimportance in the 1860s, and the town’s economic importance declined as a result.In 1962, the Lahaina Historic District, which includes downtown Lahaina, Front Street, and the surrounding area, wasdesignated as a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service. A large number of the buildings in thehistoric district have been maintained and are open to the public for viewing and exploration
